"A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy callisthenics or forced contortion."

About Pilates
What and Who is Pilates?
Joseph Pilates (right, at age 57), a legendary physical trainer, created an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength, developing the entire body uniformly without building bulk while invigorating the mind. Pilates is a perfectly balanced fusion of strength and flexibility training. A system of 500+ smooth, controlled exercises with an emphasis on proper breath and alignment offers a stimulating workout. Pilates elongates and strengthens, developing muscle elasticity and joint mobility. Pilates can be performed on a mat using just your body and gravity or on specifically designed exercise apparatus using spring- controlled resistance.
While Pilates will transform your body giving you a long, sleek look with a flat abdomen and slender thighs, it will also invigorate your mind. Pilates movements are precise and continuous causing you to think about the movements you are performing. Emphasis is placed on proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment enhancing your body awareness ultimately improving your overall coordination and concentration. With this heightened awareness you have more control over how your body moves; you move with grace. The quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Focused breathing and proper alignment help you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency. Last but not least, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress.
Our program at Pilates Powerhouse is a safe, sensible one. We offer a variety of classes for a variety of fitness populations including mature women, those brand new to Pilates as well as the advanced student, children and those recovering from injury.
Is Pilates used in rehabilitation?
Yes, Pilates is also used to rehabilitate injuries and is quickly gaining popularity in the medical field as physical therapists and medical professionals find it an excellent tool for re-educating muscle imbalances, re-training dysfunctional movement patterns and correcting biomechanical problems.
Pilates is a system of functional movement and is very adaptable to meet the needs of each individual, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Our trainers are experienced in tailoring programs to meet the needs of those with scoliosis, seniors and those with osteoporosis, those with fibromyalgia, and individuals with sacroiliac dysfunction and disc injuries. Many of our students are referred to us by their doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor.
You should consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. If you are currently under the supervision of a doctor a release from your doctor is required to start your program at Pilates Powerhouse.
